Tying up loose ends

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Trying to tie up a couple of loose ends at the start of this month.

  1. If you have signed up to Weight Lifting Program please pay your $120 and indicate when you have done so. We have the bank details at the gym so you can use your phone at the gym for online payments or just bring in cash.
  2. If you are keen to sign up for our comp on the 19th of August. Get in touch now to get your name on the list. Price is only $10 per person. Money goes towards the NZ Nationals Teams who are representing us in the Mount in October.
  3.  The last point is just a big thank you to everyone who has been bringing friends and family into the gym for a session and has helped us build this community. It is fantastic to see all you guys and girls backing up around what we are doing here.

CrossFit Games have begun

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Only one Spot left for our weight lifting program. who will be the lucky one!

The CrossFit Games are underway in Madison and it will be an absolute spectacle. The best of the best will compete for the title of fittest man and woman in the world. This is the very top of fit people in the world and what they are doing is super impressive. Now the most important thing to remember is these men and women train multiple times a day for days on end to be at their absolute best for this competition. As they say themselves, they don’t train to just be fit and healthy. They train to be the fittest people alive, they train to be able to take on the test of completing 3 huge stages (The Open, Regionals & The Games) of becoming the fittest. It is a grueling test and they have to do everything they can to come out on top.

This also means that you as a recreational CrossFitter should watch it, enjoy it but don’t try to replicate it. What they are doing at the games is not normal CrossFit. Normal CrossFit is joining a CrossFit box train 3-5 days per week, be able to live a healthy and injury free life and enjoy the community you are part of. You do not need to train 3 times per day, follow 3 different programs and try to fit it all in between your normal life. It won’t work and all you are doing is working yourself into the ground. All you need to do is follow the program of the box which will be more than enough for you to keep making improvements in all facets of fitness. Don’t worry about what they do at the games. As Castro said at the athlete dinner and I’m paraphrasing: If you are not completing some of the workouts this weekend don’t worry about it, these workouts aren’t made for you its programmed for the best of the best. And that is not talking to recreational CrossFitters, thats the top athletes he is talking to.

We are not here to say no one should have dreams about once going to Regionals or Games. I know people who have big goals and I will do everything I can as a coach and gym owner in making this reality. I am saying, working towards being a competitive CrossFitter is beyond most peoples capabilities because of all the work that goes into it, so don’t be discouraged and compare yourself to other athletes who are doing extraordinary things at the Games. Worry about what you can do, to be a fitter, healthier and better person and that is what really matters.

Meet Lucy Mossman

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

Lucy grew up on a sheep and beef farm in Gisborne. She has always been extremely active. It didn’t matter if it was sports, helping on the farm or hunting. Lucy has been a national level competitor most of her young life. She has competed in gymnastics, trampolining and surf- life saving. All sports which demanded a huge commitment from Lucy. She loves being active so it was a tough transition leaving the outdoor life on the farm and the sports when she moved to Dunedin to study health science.

I didn’t think I’d ever find something to fill that gap but CrossFit has done just that. Southern Peak CrossFit is an awesome training environment that is super motivating and rewarding. Dunedin is no doubt the place to be as a student and being a part of Southern Peak CrossFit has truly enhanced that experience for me”.

At home Lucy was training up to 20 hours some weeks to be the best at all of her chosen sports. She needed to find an outlet for that competitive drive down here and we are so happy that we are able to help her keep healthy and happy. It is impressive to see members like Lucy just pick up skills pretty much on day one. Her gymnastics background definitely has something to do with that and it just goes to show how important it is for young people to have the opportunity to be active and do sports. Lucy brings a hard working and down to earth attitude which is great to be around and she is super easy to coach.

Possible change to comp date to 19/8/17

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

I have had some inquires about the competition date. Apparently a lot of our student members who are keen to do the comp will be on holiday last weekend of August so they are proposing having the competition on the 19/8. Could I please get some feedback to whether this is ok with everyone? I am happy to change the date if you are all happy with the new date.

I would also like to say how great this week has been from a membership point of view. We have had 7 new members sign up which is absolutely fantastic. If you notice a new person in the class make sure to introduce yourself to them.

CrossFit Teens Program Starting Monday

By | Uncategorized | No Comments

We have set up a brand new CrossFit Teens Program starting next week (Monday 31/7/17). We have spent a long time working out the best and safest training program possible for your sons and daughters. It is a specifically tailored program to help teen boys and girls get fitter and healthier and have fun at the same time.

We have three main focuses with the program:

  1. Help teen boys and girls get fitter and healthier in a fun and safe environment, using the CrossFit methodology of learning technique first then add consistency and only then introduce different types of intensity.
  2. Teaching the teen boys and girls about how to live a healthy and balanced lifestyle. They will not only do training sessions, we will also teach them in a fun and easy to follow structure about eating habits and having a positive mindset.
  3. Making sure the teen boys and girls are having fun at every session. They will make new friends and learn how to support and help each other along the way. Be part of the Southern Peak CrossFit community like all our other members.

The sessions will run every Monday and Friday from 3.45-4.45pm. (We will allow for 5-10 extra min for all kids to get to the gym before we start the session).

Price will be $10/week and there is no minimum term of membership.

I am always available for a chat either at the gym or a call on 021 248 9222. Alternatively you can email me on my brand new email address:  [email protected]
